Please Pray

I would like to ask for prayer for my friend Christy. Her son Gabe is 3 weeks and 4 days old today. Yesterday (or the day before) he started to get a fever which went all the way up to 103.3 so the rushed him to the hospital. They have run a lot of tests on him but still have not found out what is wrong yet.

Here is a picture of him at the hospital:

Here is an update from her this morning:

"We are now at the North Carolina Children's Hospital (its a branch of the University of NC hospitals...which is HUGE by the way) and Gabe is in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (ie PICU). Actually right now I'm at a Holiday Inn not too far from the hospital b/c the nurse said we needed to all get some sleep since Gabe isn't allowed to eat and we can't hold him yet. (I'll be able to stay the night probably starting tomorrow as they think he'll be able to eat sometime) So here is what happened since I posted yesterday. When I went back to the hospital nothing too much was going on. Then about 1:30 AM the pediatrician and a nurse from the nursery came to see if they could draw some more blood and get an IV in, as the nurses in the ER couldn't. After blowing two veins in each arm, one in each hand, and one in his head, the nurse was able to get an IV in another spot on his head. The poor little guy had to have part of his head shaved (after he worked so hard to grow all that hair ). It was terrible watching them "dig around" in his arms. Then trying to draw blood was terrible too b/c he was so dehydrated. After they were done they gave him some more antibiotics and we tried to sleep. At about 3 am his fever was up to 103.3 so he got more Tylenol. It did nothing....only brought the temp down to 102.9! It was enough though for him to want to eat so he nursed for about 8-10 minutes (that was the last time he ate). At about 9 the new pediatrician for the day came in and it started all over again. They decided to try the spinal tap again but were unsuccessful after two tries. They again tried to get blood for tests but most of the time the blood would clot before they had enough to work with (since he was still so dehydrated, none would come out). They took X-Rays and did a nasal Flu test. The dr was beginning to think that there was something wrong with Gabe's belly (like a twisted intestine, some sort of blockage, or even appendicitis) b/c he was tensed up and even gave himself a hernia around his belly button. That on top of his fever being so high, led the dr to start calling around to hospitals that have specialists. He opted for the one we're at now because it has one of the highest ranked pediatric surgeons (just in case he needs surgery). They were going to do a cat scan and other tests but they knew this hospital would just do it over and his sick little body couldn't handle having the tests done twice. So, Gabe was air transported (we couldn't go with him) here and we had make the 2+ hr drive. Once he got here they were able to get his temp down to normal for a couple hours but it has since spiked again to 103. They were finally able to get the spinal tap so we're waiting on the results of that but they don't think it looks like meningitis. His flu test came back positive though so now when we go in his isolation room, we have to wear a gown, mask, and gloves (unless I'm just going in to pump and not going to touch Gabe or his crib). Like I said, he isn't allowed to eat yet but they think he might be soon so they gave me an electric pump to use there and I am storing the milk for when he can have it. It so hard seeing my little guy in so much pain. He was so sick earlier that he just gave up trying to fight or cry when they were sticking him. As the dr earlier put it, he's a very sick little boy, but they were going to do everything they could to figure out what was causing it and get him better. So, like I said, we are at the hotel and are going back in the morning. No visitors are allowed between 7 and 8 so we'll probably go after that. I might try to post a picture of him with the IV in his head because he looks so sad, but cute. Sorry this got so long. Thank you for all the thoughts and prayers. Please continue to keep Gabe (and my husband and I) in them as we still don't know what is making my little man so sick.
